Remote Chat Support Jobs: What the Work Is Like and Who Hires

Customer service

A remote chat support agent answers customers in writing, usually in two to four conversations at the same time, inside a help desk tool with saved replies and a knowledge base. In the US most chat jobs are hourly employee roles at outsourcing companies, software firms, retailers and financial services companies. They screen for typing speed, written English and the ability to juggle conversations without mixing them up.

What does a remote chat support shift look like?

You log in to the company’s systems at the start of your scheduled shift, set your status to available, and chats are routed to you automatically. A typical conversation: greet the customer, verify the account, find the answer in the knowledge base or order system, reply, confirm the problem is solved, tag the conversation and close it. While one customer is typing, you are already reading the next chat.

  • Concurrency: most programs start new agents on one or two chats at once and raise it to three or four as you get faster.
  • Saved replies (macros): pre-written answers for common questions; you personalize them so they don’t sound robotic.
  • Email and tickets: many chat roles also handle a ticket queue during quiet periods.
  • Escalations: refunds above a limit, complaints and technical problems go to a supervisor or a second-tier team.
  • Bots in front: many companies use a chatbot that handles simple questions first, so the chats that reach you are the harder ones.

How are chat agents measured?

Metric Meaning
First response time How quickly you send the first reply after a chat is assigned
Average handle time (AHT) Average length of a conversation from start to close
Customer satisfaction (CSAT) The rating customers give at the end of the chat
Quality score A reviewer’s score for accuracy, policy, tone and grammar
Adherence Whether you are logged in and available when your schedule says so

Who hires remote chat support agents?

  • Outsourcing companies running chat for many brands – the same companies that hire phone agents, such as Concentrix, TTEC, Foundever and TaskUs.
  • Software and subscription companies with in-house support teams, often titled “customer support specialist” or “support associate”.
  • Online retailers and marketplaces, especially before and during the holiday season.
  • Banks, fintech and insurance companies, where chat roles may require additional background checks.

Search for “chat support”, “live chat agent”, “customer support associate” and “support specialist” with a remote filter, and check that you live in one of the eligible states. You can start with our customer service job listings.

Which tests do chat support employers use?

  1. Typing test. Chat programs commonly ask for around 35–50 WPM with high accuracy; faster helps with concurrency. Practice tips are in our guide to the typing test.
  2. Grammar and writing. Spelling, punctuation and choosing the clearest reply among several options.
  3. Chat simulation. A timed exercise with simulated customers, sometimes two at once, scored on accuracy, tone and speed.
  4. System check. Many programs test your internet connection and computer before the interview.

Writing tip: short sentences, the customer’s name once, one clear next step, and no slang. Reviewers score clarity higher than friendliness.

Is chat support easier than phone support?

Chat suits you if…

  • you write clearly and type fast
  • you can switch between conversations without losing track
  • you prefer time to look things up before replying
  • you find voice calls draining

Phone may suit you better if…

  • you lose focus with several things at once
  • you explain things more easily out loud
  • spelling and grammar are not your strength
  • you want the widest choice of openings

Equipment rules are usually similar to phone roles, though some chat programs are less strict about the headset. Check the details in our equipment requirements checklist.

Which “chat jobs” are not real?

Two kinds of offers use the word “chat” as bait. Paid “chat moderator” or “companion chat” jobs that ask you to pay for registration, or to keep users talking on adult or dating platforms under a fake persona, are not customer support. And recruiters who contact you by text and conduct the whole “interview” in a messaging app are a common start of fake check and task scams. Our guide to work-from-home scams shows how to check an offer.
