“Typing jobs from home” is not one job. In the US the real ones fall into four groups: data entry and document processing, transcription, captioning, and written customer support such as chat and email. Each has its own test, pay model and employers. Ads that pay you simply to “type pages” or “copy text” with no named client are almost always fee or task scams.

Part of our trail on data entry jobs from home – start there for pay, employers and the application steps.
What are the real kinds of typing jobs from home?
1. Data entry and document processing
Keying or verifying information from forms, invoices, claims and records into a company system. Usually an hourly employee or temp job at an insurer, billing company, logistics firm or staffing agency. Speed matters, but accuracy and following format rules matter more.
2. Transcription
Typing what people say in a recording, or correcting an automatic transcript. Mostly contractor work on platforms that pay per audio minute; legal and medical transcription pay more but need training. Details are in our transcription guide.
3. Captioning and subtitling
Creating timed captions for video. Offline captioning is often platform contract work similar to transcription. Real-time (live) captioning, also called CART for accessibility services, is a skilled job that usually requires stenography or voice-writing training and much higher speeds.
4. Written customer support
Chat and email support agents type all day – answering customers in a help desk tool, often with several conversations open. These are employee jobs with schedules, paid training and a typing test. See our guide to remote chat support jobs.
How do the typing jobs compare?
| Job | Paid by | Hiring test | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data entry / processing | Hour (employee or temp) | WPM, alphanumeric KPH, 10-key, accuracy | Set shifts, sometimes part-time |
| General transcription | Audio minute (contractor) | Style-guide quiz and sample audio | Self-scheduled |
| Offline captioning | Video minute or task (contractor) | Captioning test with timing rules | Self-scheduled |
| Live captioning / CART | Hour or event | Very high accuracy at speaking speed; certification common | Booked sessions |
| Chat / email support | Hour (employee) | Typing, grammar, simulated chats | Set shifts |
The tests for data entry jobs are explained in detail in our guide to the data entry typing test.
Which typing job fits you?
- You want a steady paycheck: data entry/processing or chat support as an employee. Expect fixed hours and paid training.
- You want to choose your hours: transcription or offline captioning as a contractor. Expect variable work and low pay while you build speed.
- You have excellent listening skills and patience: transcription, then specialize in legal, research or medical work.
- You type fast and write clearly under pressure: chat support, which also leads to team lead and quality roles.
- You are willing to train for a skilled profession: real-time captioning or court reporting through an accredited program.
Before you apply: know your numbers. A typing speed and accuracy you have measured several times is the first thing almost every typing job asks for.
Which “typing jobs” are scams?
Search results for typing jobs are full of offers that use the word as bait. The patterns:
Real typing work
- Named employer or established platform
- Free test, no fees
- Pay in line with clerical work or published per-minute rates
- Specific tasks: forms, audio, chats
Typing bait
- “Type pages from home, $30 per page”
- Pay a registration fee or buy software first
- Captcha-typing sites paying fractions of a cent
- “Copy-paste jobs” that require you to recruit others
If you are unsure, run the offer through the checklist in our guide to work-from-home scams.
